Natural Dyeing Masterclass - October 2nd and 3rd - at Ria's Studio and Dye Garden, Congresbury (BS49)
Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd August - 10am-4pm - at Ria Burns’ studio, Congresbury (BS49)
A deep dive into natural dyeing, aimed at beginners or those with some dyeing experience looking to hone their skills. Hosted at Ria’s home studio and dye garden in Congresbury, the course will be a holistic approach to creating colour from plants, from petal to pigment!
During the two day course you will learn how to prepare yarns and fabrics for natural dyeing in order to get the best results, understand how different fibres behave in the dye pot, and learn how to produce a vibrant range of colours from plants picked fresh from Ria’s dye garden.
On day one we’ll prepare wool yarns and cotton fabrics for dyeing, undertaking the preparatory steps of scouring and mordanting. Ria will then take you on a tour around their dye garden, explaining the growing process and what colours can be created from each plant. We’ll finish the day by gathering fresh flowers to bundle dye a silk square scarf.
On day two the prepared yarns and fabrics from day one will be dyed a range of colours using fresh plants from the garden, foraged dyes and food waste. We’ll learn how to adjust these dye colours using modifiers, further expanding the spectrum. At the end of the workshop we will collate all of the samples created and marvel at the colours we have made!
You will leave with lots of samples, notes and the knowledge to continue your natural dyeing journey at home. This workshop is hands on, communal and collaborative. With an intentionally small class size (maximum 6 students), there will be plenty of opportunities to learn from Ria’s vast experience and knowledge of working with natural dyes.
Tea, coffee and some snacks will be provided but please bring a packed lunch on each day, or buy lunch from Cadbury Garden Centre (conveniently located over the road!).
Please wear comfortable clothing that you do no mind getting splashes of dye on, or bring an apron. If the weather is good we will be mostly working outside; please dress appropriately for this and bring sunscreen! In the event of poor weather we will work indoors. The dye garden could be muddy and slippy, so please wear appropriate footwear!
This workshop will be held at Ria’s home studio and dye garden at Woodlands, Smallway, Congresbury, Bristol, BS49 5AA. It’s accessible by public transport and there is parking available nearby.
